Why have I been asked to do an ID check?
ID checks are a required part of customer/candidate onboarding whether you’re starting a new job, opening a bank account, or purchasing a house.
ID checks help protect businesses and the general public from a range of threats including fraud and identity theft. They’re especially important when conducting transactions online and the business hasn’t met the customer in person.
Businesses also ask customers to do ID checks in order to comply with relevant government legislation such as AML checks when buying property or Right to Work checks for employment.
What does a Credas ID check consist of?
To begin the journey, you will be sent an email or SMS from Credas with your unique registration code and instructions to download the Credas mobile app. Our app is highly rated in both app stores and regularly appears within the Top 10 free business apps on iOS.
Once you’ve downloaded the app you must enter your registration code and follow the onscreen instructions to complete your ID check.
As part of the ID check, you will be required to take a selfie, capture your ID document(s) and potentially confirm your name, date of birth and address. The full process will be explained to you clearly within the app itself.
Once you have completed the ID check, your results will be made available to the business that sent the invitation.
Here are a few tips to make your ID check go smoothly
- Get your ID document ready in advance. We recommend using a passport as it is often the most trusted form of ID for an organisation
- Move to an area with a simple background and good lighting so you can take a clear photo
- Take a passport photo style selfie not something for social media

Frequently answered questions
How is my data stored and processed?
All captured data is held and encrypted, on Microsoft Azure servers based in the UK. These servers are owned and operated by Microsoft – the global leaders in computing. Credas also operates on the principle of “least privilege”; meaning our staff are provided with the minimum permissions needed to fulfil their function to minimise any accidental internal breaches. Credas holds the following IT accreditations:
- ISO 27001 – this is an internationally recognised standard of adherence to information security management and security techniques
- Cyber Essentials Plus – this is a scheme backed by the UK Government’s National Cyber Security Centre and demonstrates an organisation’s defences against cyber-attacks
Credas’ full privacy notice is available on our website which contains further information on how you data is stored and processed.
I’m having problems with my ID check?
If you are having difficulties with the Credas app you can access the mobile user guide here or contact support@credas.com.
Why I can’t I upload images of my documents?
UK Government standards require you to capture your selfie and your document(s) in real-time. The images are sent, encrypted, directly from the app to secure UK-based Microsoft Azure servers. This means that no data is stored within the app or on your device – so even if you lose your phone, whoever finds it isn’t going to be able to find that photo of your passport that you took when using our app.
How can I download the app?
The Credas app is available in both the Apple and Android stores from the links below
I don’t own a smartphone?
