1. Potential Russian Cyber attack foiled.
Dutch military intelligence disrupted a cyber attack on the headquarters of the international chemical weapons watchdog, just weeks after the Salisbury novichok attack that poisoned Sergei and Yulia Skripal.
The covert mission was foiled with the help of British intelligence, who advised that the Russian spies appeared to make little attempt to hide their presence, arriving together with Russian diplomatic passports, captured on CCTV being met by a Russian embassy official.
The group has links to several high profile cyber security cases and the equipment used by the hacking team has exposed some of the techniques commonly used to infiltrate computer networks by espionage agencies.
2. Tesla Share Plummet After Another Tweet.
It wouldn’t be a 5–For–Friday without a mention of Tesla.
Tesla shares have to fall again after Elon Musk mocked the US markets regulator on Twitter describing it as the ‘Shortseller Enrichment Commission’.
Musk – a frequent Twitter troller of critics of his electric car company – wrote the Tweet after he agreed to step down as chairman of Telsa and pay the Securities Exchange Commission $20 million.
Shares of Tesla closed 4.4% down and fell another 2.1% following Musk’s tweet.
3. Facebook could get £1.25bn fine.
As with Tesla, it seems that Facebook makes it into 5–for–Friday most weeks.
News hit this week that Facebook could be facing a potentially massive fine following its ‘biggest ever’ data hack, that affected 50 million of its users.
As a result, Facebook could be fined £1.25bn for breaching Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) – although the actual fine is likely to be much smaller.
4. Technology and Innovation To Grow Global Trade.
World Trade Organisation Director Roberto Azevêdo said technology and innovations like blockchain, artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and self-driving cars could spur growth in developing economies and global trade grow by a third by 2030.
The projection comes as world governments – including the UK – consider the impact of big tech and data in global markets.
5. Netflix is the worlds largest data user.
According to research conducted by Sandvine, Netflix has been confirmed as the world’s most data-hungry application, consuming 15% of global network traffic.
Video media accounts for 58% of the total volume of downstream traffic on the internet, followed by web browsing (17%), gaming (7.8%) and social media (5.1%), according to the report.
